Choosing the Correct Handle
Determine Handedness
Cockspur handles are available in left and right versions, the choice of which is usually determined by which hand is used to operate the handle. On side-hung windows, handles are easier to operate when the handle points downwards. So a window hinged on the left, would have a left-handed handle, with a right-hinged window using a right-hand handle.
Determine Handle Step Height
If replacing existing handles - assuming correct fit - you can simply measure the step height of the existing handle, which is the distance from the base of the backplate to the underside of the spur. Otherwise, you should measure the height from the internal face of the window sash to the internal face of the frame.
This can be done by placing a straight edge (such as a debit card) across the face of the frame, and measuring to the straight edge using a steel rule or tape measure (see image).
Determine Wedge Size
If the desired Step Height does not equal 9mm, 15.5mm or 21mm, then you will need a wedge (or striker plate) on the face of the frame. If the Step Height is less than 9mm, then you will need to use a striker plate wedge with the 9mm handle to get a tight closure. If the Step Height is over 9mm or 15.5mm, and less than 21mm, then you will need to use a wedge with the 21mm handle. The following table demonstrates how to achieve a tight closure using wedges.
